about

My 4Culture grant-funded full-length album "The Canary Collective: Vol 1" is my contribution to the dialogue amongst humans on this planet about who deserves to be able to afford healthcare, clean air, water, food, and shelter. It's me singing my sensitive soul song in the coal mine. I collaborated with other "womxn and queers" such as Luz Elena Mendoza of band Y La Bamba and Nataly Dawn of Pomplamoose to make a Cat Power and Sufjan Stevens-inspired collage of poetry, songs, and TED Talk quotes. I hope to continue to use my music and unique performance style to get people talking and singing about the ties between our healing bodies and our healing ecosystems on this planet.

lyrics

“This issue is much bigger than just my disease.
When I first got sick, old friends started reaching out to me and I soon found myself a part of a cohort of women in their late 20s whose bodies were falling apart. What was striking was just how much trouble we were having being taken seriously. I learned of one woman with scleroderma, an autoimmune connective tissue disease, who was told for years that it was all in her head…another woman with ovarian cancer who for years was told it was just early menopause… a friend from college whose brain tumor was misdiagnosed for years as anxiety.”

- Jen Brea, TED Talk

“Like odd numbers in your underwear drawer, the pain in your brain stem is political mediocrity, is food poisoning, is slipping on ice with no one around, wind knocked out of you.
No sleep.
No sleep.

I swear to God, if that sun comes any closer, I’ll make sure it knows how much I used to love it.” - Leland Chazen

“I became angry and clear, and what is more threatening than a woman who is angry and filled with clarity?

and what is more threatening than a woman who is angry and filled with clarity?

and what is more threatening than a woman who is angry and filled with clarity?”
- Tara Hardy
